No pics of the tough sections of trail, but it handled it pretty well. Only knocked a skid plate once, and now I’ve got a leaky tire, not from a sharp rock, but from a screw. I’m happy that my $1200 beater did the same stuff that the brand new Wrangler and 4Runner did, but I couldn’t help thinking how smooth, quiet, and relaxing their drives to and from the trails were compared to mine....

I also can’t believe how well the 4Runner did with all seasons, not all terrains.

I also understand why so many 4x4s, especially in BC, are auto. The steep and technical trails we were on exhausted me, but it was a walk in the park for my friends in the JL and 4Runner. I also found myself wanting a bit more wheelbase and a bit wider track.

Next time will either be with bigger, better tires, or in something newer, fuel injected, smoother, and quieter

Ha, when  they become less than 50 grand. Pre- facelift 5th gen 4Runner however, we’ll see....

I will never understand why Toyota charges as much as they do (other than because people will still buy them).

Especially for a 10 year old truck. But I guess yeah, people are still paying it so why not. I’m also waiting for the new Bronco to finally show up...

I’m pretty hyped for the new Bronco, as someone with no horse in this race.

I always found off-roading a manual to be better. Only downside is no shifting when stuff is underwater. You pick a gear and stick to it (usually 1st in 4WD, and 2nd in 4-Lo) otherwise you could suck water into things and that would be bad in the middle of a river. But it is more work for sure.

Edit: with a Rubicon’s 4:1 I guess river crossings are probably in 3rd or maybe even 4th. I just had an X Wrangler’s 2:1

It wo uld probably be more pleasant in a fuel injected truck with more power, I was about 50/50 between 1st and 2nd in 4Lo. I didn’t hate it or anything, it was a fun time. I was just acutely aware of the 3 decades of progress between my truck and theirs

Right on, dude. Some great scenery there too.

Cheap cars can be real fun. You dont care so much if it takes a little body damage doing stuff like this. Rock the fuck out of that thing until it can't anymore!

Yeah that  was a really nice thing actually, I could shove it into the bush and not care if that meant I could take a better line.

Carbs aren’t the best scenario for off-roading . F. I. makes a big difference.

Every time I drive the Pajero I want to go on adventure.

This.  I try to temper that by making sure I keep up the percentage of drives that are adventures, even if it means the truck is rarely clean.
